Warre's Vintage Port 1980

A very under-rated year, now developing magnificently. Rich, full and beautifully balanced. Great Vintage Port. The Warre 1980 is one of the finest produced. This young wine should be allowed to age in its own bottle for at least 15 to 20 years from the time it is bottled to achieve its optimum maturity. For those who prefer to drink their Vintage Port young, 4 to 5 years are sufficient. Drinking extremely well now, and is a very good buy, as it fetches modest prices yet is much better than other more expensive years.

Wine AdvocateThis house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavorful vintage port and a very good tawny called Nimrod. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop, and while they never quite have the voluptuous richness of a Dow, Graham, or Fonseca, they have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style. The 1980 is backward, firm, and has yet to reveal its true personality.

Wine SpectatorA solid vintage Port from an unsung vintage. Medium ruby, with clean perfume and black cherry aromas, full-bodied, with silky, sweet concentrated berry flavors and a medium finish.

James Suckling, 1989
